Four Hogs For Every Person: Early Agriculture in Lawrence County

According to the Tennessee Agriculture Report of 2013, Lawrence County ranked 5th in the state for beef cattle in the ‘Top Ranking Livestock and Crop Counties’ of 2012.

Our county also ranked 6th for ‘all cattle’ and 13th for milk cows. Beef has always been serious business in Lawrence County.

In 1840, cattle were such big business that there were actually more cattle in Lawrence County than there were people–231 more, to be exact. Hogs were even bigger business than cattle in 1840; that year, Lawrence County was home to 28,025 swine, meaning that there were approximately 4 pigs for every man, woman, and child who lived in Lawrence County that year.
